Nilrem Sol

The Quiet Spark

“I remember how to do this. I may need a pull or two to remember that I remember.”

GnomeMageTailoringEnchanting

Nilrem does not need to be the loudest person in the dungeon. He just likes being there when something worth remembering happens. He has run more than his share of dungeons, spent some time away, and recently started finding his rhythm again.

THE GNOME BEHIND THE SPELLBOOK

Quiet company. Serious when it matters.

Nilrem is easy to underestimate if you confuse quiet with detached. He likes people. He likes hanging around after the dungeon is technically over. He likes conversations that wander nowhere in particular, and he likes helping someone figure something out without turning the moment into a lecture.

He simply does not feel compelled to fill every silence.

Then the pull starts. The dancing stops. The joking mostly stops. Nilrem gets serious. He has been doing this long enough to know that the difference between a good run and an irritating one is often not damage meters or perfect execution. It is whether everyone is paying attention to everyone else.

He is getting back into that rhythm now. A little rusty. Still Nilrem.

01 / THE PRINCIPLEWhen the pull starts, pay attention.

Before the dungeon, Nilrem may be dancing. During the pull? Do the job.

02 / THE HUMORDeadpan is funnier when everyone else notices first.

Nilrem can deliver something ridiculous in approximately the same tone he uses to discuss dinner.

03 / THE HABITIf Polymorph works on it, the question has already occurred to him.

This does not mean every target should become a sheep. Nilrem understands this. Mostly.

04 / THE RETURNExperience does not prevent rust.

He knows dungeon play. He has also been away long enough to feel those instincts waking back up.

THE ADVENTURER'S JOURNAL · ENTRY 001

I Remember This Place.

By Nilrem Sol · The Quiet Spark

My name is Nilrem.

Yes.

It is Merlin backwards.

No.

I do not have an explanation.

People usually look disappointed when I tell them that.

I am a Mage.

That part is easier to explain.

Magic is useful.

You can make food.

You can go places quickly.

You can throw enormous amounts of elemental energy at things that were having a perfectly ordinary day until you arrived.

And you can turn things into sheep.

That last one is important.

Not always strategically important.

But important.

I've spent a lot of time in dungeons over the years.

Enough that there was a point when walking into one felt normal.

Tank goes first.

Everybody watches the pull.

Someone stands in something they shouldn't.

Someone says they absolutely were not standing in it.

The healer knows.

The healer always knows.

Normal dungeon.

Then I stopped running them for a while.

Life does that.

You step away from something.

A few weeks becomes longer.

Long enough that when you finally come back, the thing you used to know without thinking suddenly requires thinking again.

That has been the strange part.

I know this.

I know I know this.

My hands occasionally request additional evidence.

So I'm rusty.

That's fine.

Rust comes off.

You run another dungeon.

Then another one.

You remember why you moved there.

You remember what the tank is about to do.

You remember the sound your brain makes immediately before someone pulls something they definitely did not intend to pull.

The rhythm starts coming back.

That's the part I missed.

Not just the dungeon.

The people.

Standing around before somebody finally says: “Ready?”

Waiting afterward because nobody actually logged off.

Helping somebody who hasn't done the place before.

Listening to somebody explain something you already know because maybe they explain it differently.

Talking about nothing.

Talking about everything.

Sometimes not talking at all.

I am good at that one.

People call me quiet.

They're right.

Mostly.

I don't dislike talking.

I just don't think every silence needs fixing.

If we're hanging around together, I'm already having a good time.

If everybody starts laughing, even better.

This is where the dancing comes in.

There are moments when the best contribution you can make to a group is good positioning.

There are moments when the best contribution is crowd control.

And there are moments when everybody has been standing around for three minutes waiting on one person—

and somebody needs to dance.

I am willing to make that sacrifice.

Once the pull starts, though, I'm paying attention.

I like joking around.

I don't like making somebody else's run harder because I wasn't doing my part.

There's a difference.

So if you're new, ask.

If I know, I'll help.

If I don't know, we'll find out.

If I mess something up, well—

apparently I'm rusty.

Very convenient explanation.

I may keep it.

And if the situation becomes complicated, remember one thing:

There is a surprisingly good chance at least one of those problems can become a sheep.

Not all problems.

Q.A.C.K. asked me to clarify that.

Several times.

Anyway.

I'm Nilrem Sol.

Mage.

Tailor.

Enchanter.

Occasional dancer.

Returning dungeon runner.

Quiet until I have something worth saying.

Usually serious when things start trying to kill us.

Usually less serious immediately afterward.

If you see me in the Guild Hall, say hello.

You don't have to keep talking.

I'm fine with that too.

And if you see an Orc standing by itself looking entirely too confident—

give me a second.

I have an idea.

THE RETURNING DUNGEON MAGE

Old instincts. New rust.

Nilrem's time away is not something the Chronicle hides. It is part of the introduction. He is not learning dungeons for the first time; he is remembering how an old rhythm feels in his hands again.

Before the run

Relaxed. Social. Probably chatting. Possibly dancing.

When the pull begins

Focused. Watching what is happening. Trying to remember the rhythm rather than pretending he never lost it.

When someone is learning

Patient. Helpful. Not interested in making someone feel stupid for being where he once was himself.

When things go wrong

Dry humor first. Panic significantly later.

THREAD, NEEDLE & MAGIC

More than spells.

Nilrem's professions fit the same personality. Tailoring is patient work: measure, cut, stitch, correct the part nobody else noticed was wrong. Enchanting is quieter magic—not the Fireball, but the thing that makes the weapon better before the fight begins.

That feels right for Nilrem. He is a Mage capable of spectacle who does not need spectacle every minute.

The visual rule is the same: well-made, practical mage clothing with beautiful detail rather than flamboyant ornament. He should look like somebody who knows how his clothes were constructed, not somebody trying to win a parade.

WORKBENCH NOTES

Quiet craftsmanship

Tailoring: patient, measured and personal.

Enchanting: useful magic that improves what somebody else carries into the fight.

Style: restrained blue, violet and gold with arcane detail; polished, practical and recognizably Nilrem.

NILREM ⇄ MERLIN

The evidence is compelling. The explanation is not.

Someone noticed it.

NILREM backwards becomes MERLIN.

No deeper magical significance has been established. Nilrem has declined to make the situation more interesting by providing one. That has not stopped anyone else.

NILREMMERLIN

The letters check out. The explanation does not.

HOW THE WORKSHOP READS NILREM

A quiet Mage makes an impression anyway.

These are fictional Council observations inspired by the supplied personality, not literal statements by autonomous agents or real people.

HIGH TINKER

Fizzwick Brassbolt

“Experience isn't the absence of rust. It's knowing the machine will run again once ye start turning the gears.”
USER ADVOCATE

Pip Onebutton

“He actually likes hanging around after we're done. That's half the game.”
SOUND ENGINEERING

Brixie Boomwhistle

“He dances specifically to make people laugh. I have reviewed the methodology and approve.”
Q.A.C.K.

Chief Inspector Boomcheck

“Past dungeon experience: reported. Current rust: admitted. Polymorph enthusiasm: distressingly well evidenced.”
BUG REPRODUCTION

Deputy Sprocket Sniffwhistle

“How many creatures has he polymorphed? We need to start counting.”
EXPLORATION

Grimble Geartrail

“Some people run dungeons to finish them. Some remember who they ran them with.”

ANOTHER PLAYER JOINS THE CHRONICLES

Every guild becomes real one person at a time.

Adorevil, Alldez and Brixie opened the Character Chronicles. Nilrem brings a different kind of energy: experienced but rusty, quiet but social, serious in the pull and perfectly willing to become ridiculous again the instant everyone is safe.
